T-Mobile Fee Increase Coming October 12: What I'd Do Before It Hits Your Bill

Your Price Lock Does Not Cover This

Nothing got a bigger reaction from me and Juliet on today's episode of Becoming Financially Confident than the T-Mobile fee increase. Juliet called it sketchy. I called it a game.

Starting October 12, T-Mobile is raising a fee by $1 a month on every voice line. It is not a change to your plan price, so your price lock does not stop it.

This Is the Third Increase in Two Years

When I looked into it, I found the fee started at $3.49 in 2025. Then it went to $3.99, then $4.49 in January, and now it is $5.49.

It is not a government tax. It is a company fee, which is why I call it a junk fee. You are sold one price, and the real cost turns out to be something else. On a family plan with four lines, that is $4 more a month, or $48 a year you could not plan for.

A dollar here and 50 cents there across all your subscriptions adds up fast, especially if you built your budget around the numbers you were promised.

What I'd Do Right Now

  • Open your carrier's app and find the fees and charges line. Look at every line on the account, whatever carrier you use.
  • Ask whether every device needs its own service. My wife turned off cellular on her watch to save $10 a month. I think 30 cents a day is worth it, but that is the point. Make the call on purpose.
  • Call and say, "You promised me $49 a month, and with these fees it is really $56." Ask them to lower your main fee, or tell them you are looking at other carriers. Even a few months at a lower price is worth the call.

I expect this to spread. Once one carrier does it, the others tend to follow.

My Takeaway as a Licensed Public Accountant

I have 30 years of accounting experience, and my advice here is simple. Read the actual cost of every bill, not just the number in the ad. If the real number does not match what you were promised, say something.
